GRINDHOUSE

saw it! thoroughly enjoyed it!

my brief review: i definitely liked Planet Terror more than Death Proof, however both had their moments. Planet Terror just seemed more like what I think of when I think of "Grindhouse" cinema. Death Proof was more of the "Women's Revenge" genre. Plus Planet Terror felt like a real grindhouse movie, the story, the music, the acting, the dialogue, the composition. Where as Death Proof felt like Quentin Tarantino's commentary on grindhouse movies. There's a difference between playing by the rules (the fairytale) and acknowledging that you're playing by the rules (Shrek, Scream, etc.). And I love dialogue films, but in this particular mindset, Tarantino's usual "look how many obscure references I can fit in" just seemd out of place. Great, we get it. You know about a band Pete Townsend was going to join when he thought about leaving the Who.

Don't get me wrong, I loved both movies and both filmmakers. Rodriguez just won out this time. At least he kept the scratchy negative and burned filmstock look going throughout the whole thing. Tarantino did for the first five minutes then immediately abandoned it because nothing could get in the way of his precious words...

oh and i LOVE zoe bell. that is all.
