Back to black
In the early days of mass motoring, cars were black. Apart from the occasional yellow Rolls or red Ferrari. (Insurance used to cost more on a red car).
Then in the 50s, 60s and 70s manufacturers offered a rainbow of bright colours, some startling (remember Positano Yellow when it first appeared?).
I was sure the Vitesse in the foreground must have been re-sprayed black, but it was actually offered as a standard colour, not that anyone used to choose it.
Our streets now are littered with black cars. If they're not black they're silver. If they're not silver they're grey.
The only coloured car I saw this morning was a bright blue Bentley.
Why are we so desperate to be anonymous? Do we feel we have nothing to flaunt?
