Drunk History

My Dear Fellows & Dear Princess,

I watched a film called "Nasty Habits" about nuns today.

Oh stop, it is not what you think.

It is in fact a satire about Watergate, but with nuns. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It was a bit too on-the-nose. Literally, it was just Watergate with nuns. Glenda Jackson played the Richard Nixon nun and Melina Mercouri was the Henry Kissinger nun.

(Sentences I never thought I would type part 27).

The rest of our day was also spent watching movies. I put on "Rush Hour" which is one of my "drunk films". It was Cazza who explained this concept to me.

"Drunk Films" says Cazza are those films you own that you feel an urge to watch every time you are drunk. They are, by nature, easy to watch, light on thinking and do not require your full attention which may be distracted by drunk activities like a) trying to find more booze or b) trying to figure out why you can't take your pants off over the top of your Doc. Martens.

Cazza's drunk movies are:

- Dirty Dancing
- The Bodyguard
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

When I first visited her parents in 2000, she was delighted to find these films still in her parents VHS tape collection, from when they had been recorded off the telly. She told me that whenever she was w*nkered, she would stagger in, shove one of the tapes in the machine and then faceplant in front of the telly, typically only waking up later in the night with the credits rolling.

"Robin Hood: Princes of Thieves!" she exclaimed. "That's a CLASSIC!*" And put it in the VCR.

But it was a weird viewing experience. The first 15 minutes of the film were there, then ten seconds of static, then the last 5 minutes. Cazza was confused.

"I must have TAPED it while drunk as well!" she said. "And I watched it dozens of times without ever noticing."

Hmmmm. Clearly someone had fun in their early twenties.

I find "Rush Hour" similar for me. I can't argue it is a great film. Or even a good one. I've heard that even Jackie Chan doesn't like it very much. But it doesn't matter. I think maybe it is more of a time and place thing. I feel the same way about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", "American Graffiti" and for some unaccountable reason "Lethal Weapon 4".

Sober, I don't remember them so well. But drunk I expect I'd be able to recite the dialogue line by line.

I'm pretty sure I'd notice if the WHOLE EFFING MIDDLE of the film was missing though.

* It so totally is, by the way. "You - 10.45 - my room... and bring a friend." Hahahahahaha!!
