Red and white

This poppy field has become quite famous locally, with pictures in the paper and a note on the gate asking people who take pictures to make a charity contribution.

Now, that’s all very well, but this is the countryside – shouldn’t a lot of the fields be full of wildflowers. They aren’t! Over grazing, over cutting, over generous use of fertilisers, mean there are few wildflower meadows left. No wonder the numbers of insects and birds is falling dramatically.

So we, who should be surrounded by such fields, have to search out one and sort of pay to see it.

I couldn’t help thinking of this

They took all the trees
And put ‘em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half to see ‘em.

Don’t it always seem to go,
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘til its gone.

It was a bit late for seeing the poppies at their best, you can see lots of seedheads now, but it seemed an appropriate picture for the middle of summer and a glorious day without a cloud in the sky.
