Prehistoric insect

I was busy mowing and clearing paths at the nature reserve today and didn't take many photos. However, as it's National Insect Week and there were Scorpion flies everywhere I looked, I thought this should feature today. This one is a female - it's the male that has a genital capsule that looks just like a scorpion stinger. This is a very old order of insects known as 'Mecoptera' that can be traced back to the Permian period, more than 250 million years ago. They are likely ancestors of butterflies and flies.
