Scaup family

And then there were four - yesterday there were five, so I hope these four survive.

They are scaup, a little native diving duck. They can dive to 3m, and stay under for up to 30seconds. They are endemic to NZ. They are often seen with coots it's thought because coots stir the bottom up and make it easier for scaup to find food.

Also called black teal, they have four different Maori names: papango, matapouri, titiporangi, and raipo.

The new born ducklings can dive from the moment they are born, and look really cute as they dive down then pop up like a cork popping up.
