Love
Everything that is said or sung on the Oyé stage is simultaneously interpreted into British Sign Language by one of two enormously impressive interpreters: Yusef Gojikian, here, and Bobs Blackwell. They interpret from English, Swahili, Lingala, Portuguese, French, Spanish and several other languages so they must prepare translations in advance, but as well as English and British Sign Language, Yusef speaks Arabic, Armenian, French, Greek and Spanish. All to a level where he can interpret.
They use not only their hands and faces to make the music accessible to deaf people, but their whole bodies. For the headline act tonight I stopped watching the musicians and just watched this extraordinary dancing language. Music repeats so I started to learn a few words. The last picture here is, predictably, 'love'.
See Folkie's journal for some superb pictures of today's musicians.
