Baby Bouquetin's First Adventure
Never having seen such a tiny baby bouquetin before, I stayed hidden behind a ridge for an hour watching this one taking his first unsteady steps on the mountain. He followed a female and her little one right to the summit (extra 1) then realised that he had left his own Mum behind. Retracing his steps down the rocky edge was clearly much more difficult for him (extra 2) and he started bleating. Mum seemed exhausted, lying in the grass lower down, and did not move to help him. Clearly bouquetins are expected to be mountaineers from a day or two old. He curled up and closed his eyes next to his Mum (extra 3) having nuzzled her to check she was the right one. Both were sleeping in the sunshine when I left. What a privilege to observe him, he hasn't even a suggestion of horns.
