The Mould That Changed The World

Today I spent literally the whole day and all evening at the Museum Of Scotland. We premiered (world premiered, no less) The Mould That Changed The World, a musical about Fleming's penicillin, the overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of resistant disease , written by Robin Hiley. Everyone from the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, to Professor Dilip Nathwani, Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance, was there. Robin and his theatre group - Charades - produced the show, performed by P5,6,7 from Gullane Primary where I'm the music specialist.

What a day. What a wonderful day.
My HT was asked for a quote -
"If you want to get the message across, use music".

In these days of cuts in music in schools across the UK, when music is being sidelined, taken out of mainstream education and when you want to throw your hands in the air, bang your head on a piano and throw a harp through the government's window, then and only then, you need to stop and remember that everywhere it's still making a huge difference to kids. Every single child. In so many different ways.

Talk about inclusion?????? Right now, in Scotland, we are about to EX-clude kids, those kids who can't afford to pay for tuition, never mind all those kids who don't have access to a music specialist anymore. It's unbelievably short sighted, ignoring study upon study confirming the benefits of music and I'm absolutely raging about it.
However, rant aside, what a day - what a wonderful day.
