Maybe sunflowers

I'm terrible at gardening. I planted some California poppy seeds and sunflower seeds a few weeks ago before I went to the US and Scotland. The poppy seeds definitely didn't germinate. If the sunflower seeds germinated, I had forgotten about them and pulled them up with the weeds. 
So I'm trying again by planting them in a pot and if they do ok, will move the plants to the garden.
