Stepping back in time
Sunday
This afternoon we went to visit the Pioneer village at Caesar Creek State Park, near Waynesville. You can stroll around the "village" of about twenty original log buildings, depicting life on the Southwestern Ohio Frontier during its settlement from 1793-1812, at any time, but I had read that they were having a special event this weekend, so the cabins would be open to look inside. The most interesting one was where a lady was playing tunes on a hammer dulcimer, and she had a fire going in the hearth, and had been cooking period recipes in the fire earlier in the day. I t was a very poorly attended event - which was a shame, as the village is entirely volunteer run, with no money coming from the state, and some of the cabins are in serious need or repair. Several of the volunteers we have talked to on different occasions are quite passionate about what they do. This building was historically a toll house for the Waynesville-Wilmington Pike at the Massie Wayne Township line. Later it was moved across Rte 73 and was used around 1900 as a farm granary. It was purchased and moved to the village in 1981. It was quite a raw day today - the sun had been out earlier in the day, but by this time there was more cloud cover, and there was quite a cold wind. You can see more photos from the afternoon here.
