Feral Peril

Like many other Greek islands, Symi is almost plagued by unwanted cats. They have developed three survival methods, 1: Look cute and get adopted (this is a new one), 2: Try to look cute and beg at restaurants and 3: The "Bin Cats" - this one.

When I lived here, 17 years ago, we had a charity that arranged for a vet to come over from the UK and neuter as many cats (and dogs) that we could catch (a very challenging event). Unfortunately the locals are quite religious when it comes to de-sexing any animal. So they have reverted to poisoning them in the off-season, which also catches many pets and is outright cruel anyway.
