International Day

The first Saturday of the month it is Market Day in Aberdeen. One of the main streets in Aberdeen is closed off to traffic and market stalls take over. I do not totally understand why it is necessary to close off a main street when there is a perfectly good square a hundred yards away which was no doubt designed hundreds of years ago for the very purpose of holding a market.

The square possibly had to be closed to the market when public executions were taking place, but such events are unfashionable these days and it is a while since the last public execution, so this should not be an impediment to holding the market in the market square.

Periodically, I think quarterly, the market is "international". The market of whatever ilk, is very popular and very crowded. This saturday it was of the international variety. The stalls are mostly French, but Spain, Holland and Italy were also represented. Somehow I find it hard to be believe that the Italian stall has really come all the way from Italy, but the authenticity of the French contingent is supported by the number of vans with French number plates.

I am not sure of the provenance of this particular stall, however it selected itself for my Blip by being one of the few stalls I was able to photograph properly, rather than taking a photo of the back of a crowd of people. Hopefully it was worth his journey, and perhaps Bill and Ben are in there somewhere, though no sign of Little Weed.
