Nelson's County
Norfolk is described as ‘Nelson’s County’ on many of the county signs as you enter Norfolk. Today B, A and I went for a walk which took in the ruins of Creake Abbey and a visit to the birthplace of Admiral Lord Nelson (although the old rectory where he was born was pulled down in 1803 and all that remains is a plaque on the wall surrounding the current property). This was in the beautiful village of Burnham Thorpe.
My main blip is a close up shot of the abbey ruins, I so enjoyed seeing all the plants which were growing out of the ancient flint walls, including wallflowers, red valerian, toadflax and daisies to name just a few. The soft, lush grass amongst the ruins was speckled with daisies and a variety of enthusiastic birdsong could be heard echoing around the arches and walls…a beautifully serene and tranquil spot. See Bom’s blip for a fuller shot and some of its sad history.

It seems, in fact, that the more advanced a society is, the greater will be its interest in ruined things, for it will see in them a redemptively sobering reminder of the fragility of its own achievements.
