Celebrating Tartini
In a sunny square in the little town of Piran stands this wonderfully expressive statue of the violinist Giuseppe Tartini - he of the Devil’s Trill Sonata. The square is called Tartini Square - marvellous to name a square after a violinist - and he was born in a house that still stands nearby. I loved the fact that the sculptor caught the shape of the bow hand so accurately - it’s always the giveaway when someone pretends to play a violin in a film.
Piran is a seaside resort in Slovenia, where our rather lovely ship is moored for the day in the port of Koper. Lots of Venetian- looking towers and lurking lions on archways.
The food on board is amazing. Just in case you wondered...
