The Crates of the Moon

After a night in Rotorua we drove on to the Craters of the Moon Volcanic reserve en route to Lake Taupo in the first of a series of stunning drives. It's a good hour walk, there are bigger parks but we had this one more or less to ourselves.

The whole area is high in volcanic activity, there are hot springs in Rotorua and a sulphur lake that's almost completely white. The Craters of the Moon bubble and steam away quite nicely.

It's something to do with tectonic plates colliding, it's all perfectly safe, apparently....
