Whittingham's Water Feature
This is the drinking tap which stands on the village green in the village of Whittingham in Northumberland.
In 1904 the 'town pant', as it was known was converted to a drinking fountain in memory of the 3rd Earl of Ravensworth. The 'pant' is where travellers would stop to drink and to water their horses.
The inscription on the front reads:
May this pure fount perpetual streams supply
to every thirsty soul that passeth by
and may its crystal waters ever run
unchanged by winter's frost or summer sun.
The tap doesn't work, so, unfortunately, the crystal waters do not appear to be ever running.
Today's extra is of the village's 14th century Peel (or Pele) tower which was recently renovated and is now a holiday let.
