The Classic Touch
Just reporting from Fastnet Film Festival - action- packed.
What a day yesterday - we saw about 10 short films in various bars, and then two feature length films - one in the mobile cinema (the red vehicle in the extra), The one in the mobile cinema was The Breadwinner- an animated movie about the struggles of a young girl in Afghanistan attempting to look after her family under Taliban rule. You wouldn't' have thought that would make an engaging animated film but it was excellent, managing to be both hard hitting and fantastical. The second film was one of the most astonishing I have ever seen - The Killing of the Sacred Deer - brilliant in its strangeness and complexity and full of odd and obscure meaning with some riveting performances. We all emerged shaken and stirred at 10.45 pm and the sky was still light and the streets of Schull jammed packed !
This chap was just making an urgent phonecall between films and beers - maybe checking if his agent had called. The place was swarming with media types and people you sort of half recognised ( a baddy from the Game of Thrones was enjoying a pint at Hacketts for example- the one who killed his sons and married his daughters!); man buns were much in evidence as were denim smocks (female) and a lot of black (males). The sun shone and the atmosphere was jolly. A pretty impressive feat to get all this together - you could actually watch nearly 500 films over 4 days if you had the energy and eyes!
And the results of the Referendum - a definite YES!
