Following news that the era of cheap bananas may be over, scientists have been conducting a number of cross-breeding experiments with other plant varieties in order to save the nation’s favourite bendy fruit.  This is an early attempt, the lupinana.

Reaction to these experiments has been mixed.  The Health and Safety Executive is broadly supportive of the idea; “we expect this will lead to fewer slip-ups”, said a spokesman.

On the other hand, many of those who rely on the humble banana for their livelihood, such as greengrocers and music hall comedians are not so positive.  Comedians in particular fear that without a banana they will have nothing to fall back on.
