Bellingrath Gardens, Alabama

I don't know what I expected Alabama to be like, but nothing we've seen has fitted with our preconceived notions. Miles of beautiful white sand beaches, bridges spanning huge inland bays, manicured lawns and road verges, and this mansion and garden which wouldn't look out of place in a National Trust handbook (except that the ironwork would have been ripped out for the war effort).
