Many Lives

This old house has had many owners - Venetians, Ottoman Turks, Cretans - till  it was abandoned half a century ago.  No-one lives on this island now, but tourists like us come to wander and wonder at the decayed elegance, and the changes of fortune it has seen.

The past is everywhere here.  Even the face of the boatman who ferried us out reminded me of the vases I saw in the museum yesterday.  (Extra)
