Happy is He Who Picks Up
Here is a man happy as a pig in s*** as he directs operation clean up in the Meadows this morning. He and his band of merry men are the forerunners of the heavy brigade coming along behind with the big rubbish compactor vehicle. They pick up the litter on the ground and then the hoist on the big vehicle empties the bin itself.
This is just one bin amongst many strategically placed in the Meadows to cope with the detritus of the last two days of jollification in the sun and all of them were full to overflowing. It is gratifying to note that the sight of a big bin within 30yards of picknickers encourages them to pick up their litter and not simply walk away and leave it behind.
I don’t think there will be any, apart from the very hardy, who will think to spend the afternoon encamped on the grass and brave the grey skies, stiffish breeze and coolish temperatures of today. It may be that summer has been and gone, never to return, but it was heaven while it lasted, and at least the bins will not overflow.
