View from the Obelisk

This is part of the view from the viewpoint at the Mamhead Obelisk looking towards Exmouth. The obelisk was built as a landmark for shipping in 1742 by Thomas Balle, who owned the Mamhead estate. Now it is partly covered by woodland and cannot be seen easily.

We walked from here to Dawlish and back again. 10 miles of very hard walking due to the gradients, and muddy green lanes. Bird of the day was a jay.

The obelisk is a listed building, made of grey limestone, the plinth rusticated, the obelisk snecked ashlar limestone with a ball finial and copper weathervane.
The plinth rectangular on plan with a low base moulding and hollow chamfered cornice below a convex base to the obelisk intself. Weathervane in the shape of a flaming arrow. No inscription. Worth a look.
