Wych (or Scotch) Elm with a view

Making a good start before too many cars hit the road we set off to look at one of our favourite trees, we needed a photo or ten. Our newly formed community group, Mull Native Woodlands Group, (www.mullnativewoodlandsgroup.co.uk) is holding a photography competion to look at each members favourite tree on Mull. This one is by far our favourite, spotted many years ago although we will take pics of two more trees we hope. John and I will submit two entries each, the competition is open to all residents on Mull. It’s an interesting thought, partly to raise awareness of the group and also to look at native trees around us.

Wych Elm is by far the most common elm in the north and west of the British Isles and is now acknowledged as the only indisputably British native elm species. Owing to its former abundance in Scotland, the tree is occasionally known as the Scotch or Scots elm.

The hooded crows entertained us at Calgary, we had a cup of tea and scone and before long these two arrived.
