Elm to Ash
With the threat of ash dieback looming on the horizon, I thought I'd take a snap today of my favourite tree in North Beds. This stately elm tree stands by the side of the road in Colesden. A second equally impressive elm stood about 200m down the road before succumbing to dutch elm disease about 5 yrs ago.
North Beds used to be known as the County of Trees with elms such as these dominating the countryside. When dutch elm disease wiped them out in the 1970s ashes grew up from the hedgerows to replace the elms and ash is now the dominant tree in the open countryside here.
I can't help but wonder which tree species mother nature will choose to fill the void once the ashes have gone.
