Holding Hands With A God
Rest in peace to the greatest Lois Lane ever. As far as I am concerned, Christopher Reeve is Superman, Gene Hackman is Lex Luthor and Margot Kidder is Lois Lane. She played that role to perfection. I just loved the way she managed to play that role with a perfect balance of feistiness and vulnerability, smarts and stupidity, tomboy and feminine. The best example of this display of contradictions has to be the scene in Superman 2 when Lois squeezes orange juice while smoking a cigarette as part of her new healthy lifestyle. Thankfully, Clark Kent is able to reassure her that she does not have lung cancer (at least, not yet anyway) although she doesn't pay him any attention.
However, this scene, for me, remains one of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema. The romance, the grandeur, the mythic quality along with the music and the sheer beauty of the camerawork - the whole mise-en-scene is just awe-inspiring.
Rest in peace, Margot Kidder, and fly with the gods.
