Puerperal fever is a bacterial infection that may affect women after childbirth . Good hygiene practices such as washing the hands can largely avert the disease. Gordon made the connection between women dying and the spread of infection by studying an epidemic of puerperal fever in Aberdeen in 1789 to 1792 .
