Englishman in the Balkans

Stopping Over in Zagreb

I regard Zagreb as my local airport.

Yes Banja Luka does have a small airport, but in the main, it's only passenger service is a 4 times a week Air Serbia run to Belgrade. Maybe there are some seasonal flights to other destinations but nothing significant.

Even if I wanted to fly to London via Serbia's capital, the connection's simply are too crazy timewise.

So Zagreb it is for me, and a 3 hour bus journey to boot.

My usual travel routine, is to catch a bus that arrives in Zagreb centre at least 3 hours before flight departure, catch the next shuttle bus to Zagreb Airport, and then "check in".

On the return leg, it's the reverse.

Now sometime ago, (actually more than 2 years ago), Tamara and I discovered, by chance, a quite unusual hostel located inside the main railway station.

Yes inside the station.

We have always said we should try it out on a future Zagreb visit. But you know how things go in the real world, plans quite often don't plan out.

So for my return from a short visit to Skopje we decided to meet in Zagreb and spend a night in this "Railway Carriage Hostel".

An amazing experience, from the friendly and helpful staff to the amenities provided.

The pricing is extremely attractive as well.

We are already saying it will be our "go to" accommodation for future overnight stays.

This post isn't a paid advert or promotion. I just thought it might be of interest if you are considering, or plan to, transit through Zagreb at any time :)
