Danube Gorges

We went on an optional day excursion today, on board a small day boat, and sailed through the Danube Gorges.... high precipitous limestone cliffs ..... a shallow twisting river, which eventually revealed this hidden gem of a Benedictine monastery; Weltenburg Abbey.

It was established in the 7th century and is the oldest monastery in Bavaria...... equally important, perhaps, is that it is home to the oldest monastic brewery in the world ...... and its award winning dark beer!!
