Old bottles

This motley collection of bottles sit on a shelf for no other reason than I find them attractive. I found the Bovril bottle in the garden. The blue bottles contained poison, hence their colour. The large, clear bottle contained fizzy drink. The Codd-neck bottle was designed and manufactured to enclose a marble and a rubber washer/gasket in the neck. The bottles were filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle was pinched into a special shape, as can be seen in the photo to the left, to provide a chamber into which the marble was pushed to open the bottle. This prevented the marble from blocking the neck as the drink was poured. Many of these bottles were broken by children to get the glass marble so they are a somewhat rare.

The pocket watch stands with them but that may be the subject of another blip.
