What's that coming over the hill...?

It's a monster!

Hoverfly that is. This is one of the first I've seen this year and it actually sat still for a few minutes. It was huge; far bigger than I would normally see at this early on. 

Could this be a survivor from last year?  It seems unlikely.

Please have a look in large - I'm quite pleased with the facial detail. I always think their eyes look like aviator helmets.
