Union Chain Bridge
My dentist cancelled my appointment, which gave us time to go out to play. Mr Flum remembered a recent TV article on the Union Chain Bridge, being the oldest surviving suspension bridge in Europe and the first of its kind designed for vehicles, so, with his Civil Engineering hat on, that became our destination . The bridge crosses the River Tweed connecting Paxton, Scotland and Horncliffe, England.
Please read the link (no pun intended) to spare my repeat typing of information. The main pic is from the Scottish side, looking towards the old Toll House, 1st extra from the English side, to prove that the bridge still carries traffic (but only of limited width), the 2nd extra is one of the motifs facing traffic on both towers , the motto reads Vis Unita Fortior, translated as United Strength Is Stronger.
Restoration work is programmed for completion in time for bi-centenary celebrations in 2020.
