poppy bud after rain

We got a nice rain last night, gentle and soaking in. I bought a new rain gauge because the old one sprang a leak. Now I find that it is marked in eighths of an inch! How in the wide world did that happen? so last night we got an eighth which according to my calculation is 0.125 inches. Am I right?
