"2001"

Stanley Kubrick's film "2001" was released 50 years ago this month.  I saw it soon after it came out. 

Tonight, I went to see it again - this time at the Southbank Centre (Royal Festival Hall in London) where it was shown with the music played by a live orchestra.  The music was always an important part of the film, and is probably best known for the opening sequence accompanied by Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and the scene of the space station drifting slowly through space, accompanied by the Blue Danube Waltz (Johann Strauss II).

Five decades on the film still works well.  Technically it is excellent (the special effects are entirely believable - and no modern CGI) and stylistically it is unique. A very enjoyable evening.
