Jobs demo in Palermo

All traffic came to a halt in the centre of Palermo today - jobless young men had occupied the centre of main roads with oil drums and were beating on them watched by hundreds of other young and not so young men.
We wondered if we would be able to get to the airport.

A few days ago we passed acres of oranges left to rot on trees because oranges were being flown in from other countries and sold cheaper than the Sicilians could sell them for.

Pix of demo in blipfolio marked Sicily. Afraid they do not give much of an impresssion of what took place because it was the sheer noise of the event that was so startling - and it had been achieved with very little - just half a dozen empty oil drums and batons.

I left Sicily today with feelings of deep foreboding for the future of Europe
