Today’s TinyTuesday challenge theme is "travel".
This might not seem relevant but the tiny 4 cm long box with its contents was rescued from the sea.  My husband’s grandfather was chief engineer on a merchant ship travelling from Calais to Middlesbrough during WW1 when it was captured by a German U-boat.
On 2 November 1917 after calling at Bridlington the ship was attacked by gunfire three miles north of Flamborough Head. The steamer attempted to make it to the shore but the repeated gunfire caused significant damage and the crew fled into the lifeboats.  Unfortunately one of the lifeboats capsized and despite being a good swimmer William drowned. His pocket watch and this little box were found and given to his young wife.  As a widow she was left with three very young children, including my father in law who was only 15 months old and had no memories of his father.
The money includes a French 50 centime note, a Dutch coin and two Belgian coins. Interestingly the box was originally for potassium chlorate tablets which were commonly used for gargling but appear to have been very dangerous.  So the box indicates a sad history of a travelled journey that ended in tragedy over a hundred years ago.
