River Petteril (19)

After a bit of a gap, I am back following the River Petteril.

We last saw it here, as it was making its way north to Carlisle. Before we continue the journey, I must mention something I have referred to before – the Roman fort and civilian centre of Voreda, which was next to the Roman Road  - now overlaid for the most part by the A6. This was a major settlement and the reason I mention it now is that it was built very close to the Petteril, a site obviously chosen for a reason.

In this photo you can see the stone platform (now covered in grass), on which the Fort was built. The cows grazing on top give it some sort of scale. It must have been an impressive building. To the right of the picture, the line of trees marks the Petteril, below the Fort. The road you can just see to the left of the picture, now the A6, was once the Roman Road. Many soldiers would have marched along here, to and from Carlisle. There is evidence of several marching camps close by, probably used before the Fort was built. The River Petteril was obviously important to the Romans and they built their roads and settlements close to it.
