Back on the island. Nearly missed the boat from Granton (so much easier than having to get out to South Queensferry first thing!)
I have got a route worked out for unlocking all the many doors in the Abbey every morning, and for locking up again in the afternoon.
Last or first port of call is the undercroft of the "Abbot's House" (probably, though it may have been an infirmary, and was certainly used for that purpose by the Russian fleet during the Napoleonic wars)
Whatever it was, the servants and cooks were busily working away down here to provide sustenance. I'll have to try to get a shot of the inside of the oven, it's enormous!
Most of the stonework here is mid-1400s.
