My Dad spent 4 years in Burma and India from 1941 to 1945.  Like a lot of other husbands.  So a photo in the mail would have been quite special.  Even if he was a man of few words.

He was a radar engineer in the RAF, installing equipment around the South Coast of England, before doing the same in Asia.
