With just the slightest sense of ennui we plugged in the newly returned phone.  The speedy Mr Motorola, in fixing the unspecified fault, seemed to have missed the elephant in the room.  Still wouldn't charge fully and ran down in about 3 hours.  So another 3 days of cycling the battery and screenshots in preparation for more phone calls.
