Between fen and mountains

Hermione, Banyuls and the coastal path

Hermione has docked in Port Vendres and we decided to drive to the coast to take a look unfortunately along with hordes of other people.  Parking was very difficult but we got lucky and then walked around to the ship. Hermione is a replica of the frigate that took Lafayette, a key figure in the American and French revolutions, across the Atlantic. They had fenced off the whole area and to get close required a very long queue for a security check and then an even longer queue for a ticket to board as only a limited number were allowed on at a time.  The organisers could have managed it better as most people could only see the ship through high mesh fences. The town was a bit too busy so we went along the coast to Banyuls for lunch, sea bream followed by mascarpone with a raspberry coulis.  That required walking off so a hike followed along the sentier littoral to Cap Béar, a rugged and steep path that takes in several criques but with magnificent views (see extras).
