Just Within Reach

I've developed a couple of 'theories' about squirrels and the tasty little new leaves on our Winged Elm tree...1. the daring acrobatics performed to reach the newest, and apparently tastiest, leaves are done by young squirrels. (the mature ones are very happy thank you, eating at the dropped bird seed and peanuts Buffet). 2. I'm betting that the leaves must contain a narcotic of some kind! The squirrels do the strangest things high up in the tree. They zoom around and take crazy chances with life and limb to reach the new leaves way out on the thinest branches.
These young leaf 'addicts' fall occasionally, usually from low on the tree so that they never seem to suffer any injury. Once in a while though, one will misjudge and fall from a branch up high in the tree. As it falls, the squirrel grabs at branches on it's way down, all four feet desperately trying to catch hold, which they usually do. I've yet to see or find later, a 'fall-related' injured
one. Or maybe a hawk swoops in to finish it off. Who knows. ;)
Wishing all of you a Safe and Enjoyable Weekend!
