Budding Archaeologists
Tonight was the first meeting of the lottery funded project in Shaftesbury to train up local people as archaeologists to survey parts of the town.
This is Dan a young archaeologist showing us artefacts to practise identifying. It was fascinating as we had a short introduction to looking at layers ( stratigraphy) and we were all given samples of soil to identify using accurate descriptions - eg light reddish brown or is it mid brownish red ???!!
Our next event will be to learn in the field so to speak - I’m not quite sure about digging the sample pit 1m by 1m - talk of pits higher than us - eek !!!!!:))
A large number of people will be involved as they have 2 more evenings to deliver like this before the field work. Watch this space .
The extra photo shows Paul with his hands in the clay I sh soil we had to inspect .
