Roadside shrine
A very enjoyable morming this morning - we met Finola for breakfast in Schull then we all went for a walk, including a bracing stretch up Sailor's Hill. Finola wrote a blog about it recently and it was somewhere we had never been - so off we went. The day was clear and fine and the views stunning. At the summit of the hill the area has been sensitively yet quirkily landscaped by Connie in memory of sailors who have lost their lives at sea. He has built himself a belvedere from which to stare out at the magnificent view. That's Long Island in the distance (see extras).
What I really wanted to see was the teeny shrine and it turns out that this was Connie's work too. He made it for his mother many years ago, to look after the old homestead, and I just love the three little blue triangles - they convey so much!
Roadside shrines are everywhere though this is a very tiny and personal one. How exciting to find that Google has made a map of all the ones it has captured on Street View - have a look at Street Pew!! It takes a bit of fiddling with but hours of fun!
