Quaint and Quirky
After a fantastic week away with the family in Somerset, it was time to pack up and leave our holiday home. It was amazing how, without any particular planning or organisation, everyone just got on with things and, in no time, the place was tidy and our cars loaded. We even found the last, missing Easter egg!
I had read about a couple of 'ruins' I fancied visiting along the route so it was well into the afternoon before we'd even left Somerset. First ruin was Nunney Castle near Frome - a small moated tower-house castle dating from the 1370s; quirky in its way and I used my glass ball to make more of the quirkiness! There were several other visitors there including a largish family group with some boys having great fun climbing the walls and jumping out of the castle windows despite the sign which said - please do not climb on the walls! I was very polite and asked the parents if they would stop their children doing this to avoid damage. Fortunately they were very apologetic and immediately went after the culprits!
Our next stop was Fussell's Iron works only a few miles along the road from the castle. I had noticed this in my book of Wild Ruins. In the 18th century it had been a prosperous iron works but declined and then forced to close. Today it is a very pleasant walk in the woods along a trout stream with evidence of past times here and there (extra).
Another great family holiday with many fantastic memories and next year to look forward to - already organised and booked!
