Looe / Day 2
Once we knew we were coming to Looe, the Minx characteristically set about looking for some routes I might run*. One of those routes was along the coastal path from Looe to Polperro. Optimistically, I assumed the path would follow a contour line, at least approximately, and I worried that it might even be a bit dull, the boredom perhaps mitigated by some splendid views.
I need not have worried. Yesterday, I ran to the start of the coastal path and back - about four miles - and I saw that there was at least a bit of a climb at the start. Lord, it turned out that was the easy part! In fact, apart from a couple of stretches, maybe of a few hundred metres each, the path was always up or down, often quite steeply. And muddy.
And as I was running to Polperro to turn 'round and come back the same route, even the downhill parts held some future threat. But despite all the parts uphill and downhill on the way to Talland Bay, nothing prepared me for the climb up the hill from the bay towards Polperro. With that section of the coastal path closed, there was no choice but to follow the road straight uphill.
It was, in truth, the hardest ten miles I've ever run but I was bloody delighted with myself when I finished!
*On Friday evening I went out for a couple of drinks with my friend, Chris, and his excellent family. Like the Minx, he is the organiser for his family. Truly (and as I said to him), any family is blessed to have someone who enjoys doing the legwork on holiday planning.
