Ciao Roma

Today was our last day, so we got up quite early and went back to the Pantheon before it got too crowded. It's an incredible structure; the diameter of the dome of the Pantheon is the same as its height and in the centre is an occulus, several meters across and open to the elements. When it rains outside, it rains inside but the floor is well designed with discrete drainage.

The reason it survived the Papal destruction of many pagan temples is because it was reconsecrated as a Christian church in the 7th century. The Pantheon is still an active church and mass is held daily.

Quite sad to come home but also exhausted. It's been a busy trip but I'm glad we saw as much as we did, next time we can take it easy (and avoid ankle-related injury!).
