Trent and Mersey Canal

Walked the towpath on a stretch of the Trent and Mersey Canal. This bridge is just before double lock 49. It used to be a single lock and therefore a single span in the bridge built by James Brindley.
Probably around 50 years later it was expanded into a double lock and an extension to the bridge was made by Thomas Telford. He matched the older bridge perfectly but used stone around the arch where Brindley had used brick.
It does look better viewed large.
