Turning back the clock
Back in about 1897 or so, some stupid Prussian decided the the River Niers would be better if all the bends were straightened and so increase the speed of the water and reduce flooding, it increased the speed, which caused problems with banks washing out and flooding in previously problem free zones. Only the building of weirs and sluice gates partially solved the problem, but the river died, being virtually an open drain.
Now the Powers that Be, have decided to return the River to its old bed, fortunately much of the land is unbuilt on ( because of the flood problems) and so they have removed the Weirs, and dug meanders and bays, the river is back, and already is making the course it own, forming sandbanks and deep slow stretches. Just needs the path finished, trees planted and let Mother Nature do her job. should be nice next year....especially if the fish return as well!
