The Kapehu Whetu,

This is an artistic interpretation by James Webster of a Polynesian star compass system used by Maori and Polynesian ancestors as well as modern day waka navigators. Memorised, it is held only in the mind and heart throughout the voyage.
The circle is divided into 32 quadrants, each marked by a particular star and it's 'whare', or house, i.e., the place that star rises from the ocean. The navigator must know where these stars rise and set to calculate the course of the journey.
This is situated at the Whitianga ferry landing on the Coromandel Peninsula.
